LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER NAMED

CALIFORNIA OUTSTANDING PHYSICAL EDUCATION EDUCATOR

Mary Hirt, Lincoln Middle School physical education teacher and Chair of the Physical Education Department, has been named the 2002 California Outstanding Physical Education Educator of the Year by the State of California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD).

CAHPERD's criteria for the Outstanding Physical Education Educator was that the teacher's work be in line with California middle school and State frame works. The Outstanding Physical Educator would have to demonstrate how they conduct a balanced and sequential curriculum that reflects an understanding of a child's growth and development, include innovative learning experiences to meet the needs of all students, serve as a positive role model, participate in professional development opportunities, and serve on state/district/national committees and/or present workshops.

Ms. Hirt's background made her an excellent applicant in a very extensive process. In addition to teaching Physical Education at Lincoln Middle School and serving as Chair of the Physical Education Department for twelve years, Mary is a Physical Education Instructor at California State University, Northridge, a Physical Education consultant and a presenter at many workshops and conferences.

Ms. Hirt states, "The middle school physical education program creates opportunities for students to explore movement, develop an understanding of health and fitness, and create a desire and love for daily physical activity. More importantly, physical education is the foundation for students to build a lifetime of health and wellness. I love teaching and I enjoy seeing children play. Although I have received recognition for my work, no award comes close to the satisfaction I receive witnessing children and adults lose themselves in play. It is that process that support me to continue the work that is required to make physical education a respected and valued part of our daily school experience."
