FITNESS CENTER OPENING AT
SANTA MONICA HIGH SCHOOL

Grand Opening ceremonies will be held at Santa Monica High School, 601 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica on Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. for the school's new Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness Center. The Center is funded through a three-year grant program from the Cynthia L. & William E. Simon, Jr. Foundation. Santa Monica High School Co-Principals, Kirsten Hibert and Mark Kelly applied for the grant in November, 2001 and it was approved in late December, 2001.

According to Chris Corliss, District Coordinator of Sports and Physical Education programs, "We could not have done this without the Simon Foundation's support. The Santa Monica High Sound Mind Sound Body Advanced Fitness Course will encourage tenth through twelfth grade students to participate in physical fitness activities that can be used throughout their lifetime. Santa Monica-Malibu Schools are committed to improving student fitness because we now know it improves both student academic performance and health. The first step to achieving this goal is to build and provide access to quality facilities and programs like the Sound Body Sound Mind Program."

Specific objectives of the grant program include the creation of learning activities to develop student and staff cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance and reduce body fat by increasing lean body muscle mass. "The Fitness Center will provide a clean, safe health club environment in which all students enrolled in the Fitness Course and staff may participate in physical fitness activities at school," said Corliss.

Simon Foundation has provided grant funds to launch Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness Programs at other local area high schools including Venice and Saint Monica's High Schools.
