At its meeting of May 16, 2002, the Board of Education appointed a Principal/Chief Education Officer for Santa Monica High School and a Principal at Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School.

Effective July 1, 2002, Chi Kim will assume the principalship of Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School. Chi Kim earned her Masters Degree in Teacher Education from UCLA and her Administrative Services Credential at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and earned a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Psychology. Chi comes to us from the Reed Union School District in Tiburon, Northern California where she was principal of Reed Elementary School. She has been a mentor principal and in the Inglewood School District, held the positions of Assistant Principal, District Liaison, Team Leader, and School Site Coordinator. Chi Kim is viewed as a true instructional leader with exceptional skills. She has proven herself as a strong supporter of her staff and parents and is very open to her students. Chi acknowledges the extraordinary needs of her students and believes the entire community is the key to ensuring academic success for all students. She believes that when teachers are supported and encouraged to grow personally and professionally, the direct effect shows in the classroom. We are extremely fortunate to have Chi Kim take the leadership at Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School.

Effective July 1, 2002, Dr. Ilene Straus will become Santa Monica High School's Chief Education Officer. Charged with guiding and directing the educational program of the school, we are fortunate to have this dynamic leader whose abilities and experience are well known in the community. For the past 16 years, Dr. Straus has been principal of Lincoln Middle School. Under her leadership, Lincoln was named a California State Distinguished School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and Disney Spotlight School of the Year. Among many awards conferred upon her are YWCA of Santa Monica Woman of the Year, 1996 and State of California Outstanding Secondary Principal of the Year, 1991. She earned her Doctorate of Educational Leadership at UCLA and Masters Degree, Educational Administration at California State University, Northridge.

Don Shalvey, CEO of Aspire Public Schools has said about Dr. Straus, "Ilene's leadership approaches "grandmaster" quality. No one fosters a vision and gets everyone behind that vision like Ilene." He continues, "I believe two of Ilene Straus' most important talents are her ability to attract, recruit and maintain an excellent staff and her courage. She establishes high standards, supports each individual in their own growth and demonstrates the courage to take the difficult stand on accountability."

Ilene has focused on building instructional capacity among her staff members and administrative team and believes in a distributed leadership model. She took a leadership role in making sure the needs of all students were met through school restructuring. We are fortunate to have a leader of Dr. Ilene Straus' caliber dedicated to student success at Santa Monica High School.
