Lincoln Middle School will unveil its 2000 National Blue Ribbon School Award, presented by the U.S. Department of Education, in a ceremony at the school, September 28 at 9:45 a.m. Santa Monica Mayor Ken Genser, Santa Monica Unified School District Superintendent, Dr. Neil Schmidt, and SMMUSD Board President Todd Hess will join school principal Dr. Ilene Straus, her staff and students for the celebratory Blue Ribbon Day event.
Lincoln's superb Concert Band will kick off the day with a rousing performance of Strike Up The Band! In a special new arrangement by Hugh Conrad. The formal presentation of the award will be followed by lunch as well as dancing with a deejay spinning a lively selection of "blues" favorites. Students will be specially decked out for the occasion - in blue. Teachers will be honored with a gift of flowers, tied in blue ribbons and presented by the student government. Everyone on hand will wear blue ribbons and every will receive blue lollipops.
The Blue Ribbon Award, the Department of Education's most prestigious honor, recognizes schools for excellence in leadership, vision, teaching curriculum, student achievement, parental involvement and community support. Of the several thousand schools that applied, just 198 were selected for the distinction this year. Dr. Straus and four members of her faculty will travel to Washington, D.C. September 21st to accept the award.
In making the award, the Department of Education cited Lincoln Middle School for its rigorous and challenging standards and curriculum, active teaching and learning, connection to students, high achievements, and ongoing parent and community support. Lincoln Middle School ranks 8th among schools in Los Angeles County in Academic Performance Index test scores, and ranks among the top 12 percent in API scores statewide. It has twice been named a California Distinguished School. Its music program is among the most ambitious and accomplished in California and has been repeatedly been recognized for excellence.
