For Immediate Release

April 6, 2001

At its Board meeting of April 5, 2001, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education took action to appoint Ms. Maureen Bradford as principal of Will Rogers Elementary School and Mr. Ruben Valles as principal of Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH).

Ms. Bradford began as a bilingual classroom teacher in SMMUSD in September of 1976. She served as a bilingual teacher for thirteen years prior to undertaking the leadership responsibilities of coordinating and implementing the Title I program at Will Rogers Elementary School.

Ms. Bradford has served as a District mentor and has presented and coordinated staff development in the areas of literacy and technology at the school site, district, and regional levels. She has also served on numerous curriculum committees and has been lead writer on a number of District grant proposals, including Goals 2000 and the Annenberg Challenge.

In May of 2000, Maureen Bradford was asked to serve as Acting Principal of Will Rogers Elementary School when the former principal went on leave. The April 5 Board action removes the interim status and establishes Maureen Bradford as officially designated Principal.

Ruben Valles is currently serving as Assistant Principal of Paramount Park School in the Paramount Unified School District. Mr. Valles has held that position since 1998. Prior to joining the administrative team at Paramount Park, he served as a substitute teacher, adult education teacher, elementary classroom teacher, mentor/supervising teacher and school site coordinator. Mr. Valles earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in political science from UCLA. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from California State University, Los Angeles. Currently, Mr. Valles is in his second year of doctoral study at UCLA, where he expects to earn his Ed.D. in 2002.

While it is not expected that Mr. Valles will officially start as the SMASH principal until July 1, 2001, arrangements are being made for him to begin spending time in our district and at SMASH as soon as possible so that he can begin to know the school, community and district.
