Sums 2 Algebra Project Summary

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) proposes SUMS to Algebra: Students Using Math Successfully to Algebra, to accelerate mathematics achievement of under-performing upper elementary and middle school students. "Extraordinary Achievement for All Students while Simultaneously Closing the Achievement Gap" is our district's stated mission, yet despite systemic efforts, there is a persistent and significant gap in mathematics performance between economically disadvantaged students in Grades 4-8 and their more affluent peers. Our aim is to provide rigorous and engaging mathematics instruction so that all students are well prepared to successfully complete algebra and advanced mathematics coursework that will lead to admission into four-year universities. SUMS to Algebra will use powerful technology to effectively close this achievement gap by providing the tools needed to dramatically change how teachers teach and students learn. The use of state-of-the-art technology will enhance students' deep conceptual understanding of key mathematics concepts and provide learning opportunities that mirror students' real-world, media-rich environment.

SUMS to Algebra will be launched in 4th – 8th grade classrooms at targeted school sites -- those with the highest percentages of economically disadvantaged students. Classrooms will be equipped with LCD projectors and Smartboards for lively and engaging direct instruction in mathematics. Students will have access to wireless laptop or desktop computers for individualized instruction, small group projects, assessments and follow-up. The project's software, Riverdeep's Destination Math, uses multimedia lesson modules that are research-based, and designed around state standards. The connectivity built into the project will ensure that the high level of engagement in mathematics teaching and learning spills outside of SUMS classrooms. Teachers, students and parents will be able to access the program's web portal from anywhere and anytime, enhancing home-school communication and collaboration. The city of Santa Monica provides a level playing field for our economically disadvantaged families with computer workstations and Internet access at public libraries, parks and recreation centers. This free and easy access is a major contributing factor to the anticipated success of our project.

SUMS teachers will participate in over 120 hours of professional development, including powerful collaboration time with SUMS colleagues and coaches within the district. These PD sessions will deepen teachers' understanding of mathematics concepts. In addition, they will provide hands-on practice in using technology as an instructional tool to deliver engaging direct instruction; to assess and monitor student progress; and to differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs.

This Sums to Algebra proposal was developed in consultation with our local private schools. Several of these schools have a track record of utilizing Title 1, Title 2 and Title 5 funds to support technology at their sites. We encourage all of our sites to examine the hardware, software and training components of this proposal in order to determine the extent of their participation.
