Educational Services - Project-Based Learning (PBL)

Project-based learning (PBL) is coming to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District for the 2019-20 school year!

The Board of Education approved this exciting high school education model following parent and community engagement sessions, visits to schools with successful PBL programs and several board meeting discussions.

The four-year rollout includes a PBL freshman cohort of 100 students in the first year, along with the development of specialized career learning pathways. An interest-based learning (Capstone) model will be added in year three to serve additional juniors and seniors. Students will engage in an inspirational and progressive educational experience that cultivates a personal commitment to learning, independent thinking, and community.

Students will:
  • Get an individualized, interest-based learning plan.
  • Learn academic content fully aligned to California state standards, through integrated and rigorous real-world projects.
  • “Leave to learn” for professional industry internships to connect interests to fieldwork, and to build skills and a professional network.
  • Participate with Samohi friends in sports, clubs, social events, art and theater courses, languages and more!
  • Benefit from SMMUSD’s newly renovated learning facility, The Innovation Center on Ocean Park & Lincoln.
  • Graduate with a Samohi diploma.
  • Be college and career ready!
