SMMUSD Strategic Plan

The purpose of a Strategic Plan is to provide the district with a living document that is the result of a data-driven planning process that engages all stakeholder groups; identifies immediate/long range goals and areas of focus; and provides the district and Board of Education with a tool to guide decision-making and alignment of priorities.

While developing the updated Strategic Plan, the district took care to honor the 2002 Strategic Plan, engage all stakeholders and the broader community, benefit from current research and thinking, and limit the number of goals and initiatives.

Strategic Planning Process

The previous Strategic Plan was adopted in 2002.  In January 2010, the district began a four-stage process to create an updated plan that would guide SMMUSD through the next five years.

STAGE 1 - Start Up

STAGE 2 - Discovery

With the help of consultant Gensler, the district conducted an environmental scan in which community stakeholders were asked their opinions regarding the district’s strengths, challenges, important opportunities the new plan should address, and the vision of the district’s future.

STAGE 3 - Design and Develop

Community Open Houses - April 2010

The Strategic Planning Team reviewed input gathered from the environmental scan and prepared for the first round of Community Open Houses.  This first round of open houses was held April 12, 13, 15, and 21, 2010, throughout Santa Monica and Malibu.  It allowed the district to share valuable information about the strategic planning process with the community and gather ideas and insights about the future of education in the District.

Community Open Houses - April 2011

Feedback was also elicited from the district’s management team and school site staff.  Input from these various events was coalesced into a draft framework that was shared with the public in a second round of Community Open Houses, held on April 26, 27, and 28, 2010, throughout Santa Monica and Malibu.  This second round of open houses was designed to share information about the district’s draft Strategic Plan Framework and the next steps in developing the actions to meet the goals.
