New Director of Early Learning
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Susan Samarge-Powell, Ed.D, as the new director of early learning at its April 20, 2017 regular meeting. Her position will be effective July 1, 2017.
Dr. Samarge-Powell has served as principal of Webster Elementary School in Malibu for the past four years, where she was responsible for overseeing a 350-student transitional kindergarten through fifth grade school, including managing all certificated and classified staff. Read more >
|Child Development Services offers both preschool programs and school-age child care programs throughout Santa Monica. We welcome the opportunity to work with children who have special needs and their parents to determine how we can support every child's successful participation in our programs.
Preschool: The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) preschool programs offer experiences for 3 and 4 year old children through the California State Preschool Program and Head Start. Programs are available for a fee, or are no-cost or low-cost for financially eligible families.
School Age: The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) School Age programs are available for students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) to 3rd grade at all elementary schools in Santa Monica and at Juan Cabrillo in Malibu for students K to 5th grade. Our Before and After school programs offer a rich array of activities as well as a daily homework opportunity.
Teen Center: Students at Lincoln Middle School are offered a safe and supervised childcare environment during after school hours. Every day, the “Teen” Center offers students a relaxed atmosphere where they can socialize, get homework done with assistance and engage in age appropriate activities. SAMOHI Infant & Toddler Program/Teen Parents: Services are provided for infants and toddlers 6 weeks to 3 years of age. The program is located on the Santa Monica High School campus and operates from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. The infant ration is 1 to 4 and the toddler ratio is 1 to 6. The center is licensed for 28 children. Pregnant and parenting teens may enroll in the Teen Parent Program. For more information, call 310-395-3204 x71167.
