SMMUSD Board Approves Project Labor Agreement

The SMMUSD Board of Education approved a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council recently, providing for future apprenticeship programs for students, alumni and community members. A PLA is a collective bargaining agreement with one or more labor organizations that establishes the terms and conditions of employment for workers on construction projects in the school district and includes provisions for development of a training and apprenticeship program. NAMM 2017 Music AwardSMMUSD's Music Education Program Receives National Recognition

Santa Monica and Malibu named a Best Community for Music
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has been honored with the "Best Communities for Music Education " designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. SMMUSD joins 526 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2017, and is one of only two districts in Los Angeles County to be recognized. Read More>

Susan Samarge-PowellSMMUSD Announces New Director of Early Learning

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Susan Samarge-Powell, Ed.D, as the new director of early learning at its April 20, 2017 regular meeting. Her position will be effective July 1, 2017. Dr. Samarge-Powell has served as principal of Webster Elementary School in Malibu for the past four years, where she was responsible for overseeing a 350-student transitional kindergarten through fifth grade school, including managing all certificated and classified staff. Dr. Samarge-Powell models the highest level of professional interactions with staff, students, parents and the community and is a strong educational leader. Read More >

New California School Dashboard Provides Increased Transparency

California is field-testing a new website designed to help communities across the state access important information about K - 12 districts and schools. Called the California School Dashboard, the site features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including test scores, graduation rates, English learner progress and suspension rates. The Dashboard replaces the previous Academic Performance Index (API) system. Read More >

Summer Adventure, Enrichment Program for Elementary and Middle School Students, Returns for 34th Year

Summer AdventureRegistration is now open for Summer Adventure, a fun and affordable summer enrichment program co-sponsored by the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation and the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs. The five-week program takes place from June 19 through July 21, 2017 and is open to students entering transitional kindergarten through 9th grade. Learn More >
