SMMUSD Elects New School Board Officers

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education elected new officers at its regular organizational meeting held December 14, 2017. Dr. Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein will serve as president and Jon Kean was elected to serve as vice president. The new officers assumed their duties following the election. SMMUSD Bond Oversight Committee Accepting Applications

There are currently three (3) vacancies on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Bond Oversight Committee established in order to satisfy the accountability requirements of Prop 39 and Education Code section 15278. Three members are needed to fill the seven-member committee. SMMUSD is seeking qualified candidates who meet the criterion, in accordance with Section 5/1 of the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee Bylaws. SMMUSD Launches Districtwide Continuous Energy Initiativ SMMUSD Launches Districtwide Continuous Energy Initiative

The Santa Monica-Malibu School District has launched a districtwide Continuous Energy Initiative, an extensive program that focuses on energy saving behavior and is aimed at creating educational opportunities. The Initiative is managed by the Facility Improvement Projects department under the direction of Caroline Coster, sustainability coordinator. The initiative was developed in partnership with Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas and Ecova Inc., a consulting firm that assisted with setting energy goals, targets and numeric baselines. Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati Addresses Next Steps on Malibu Unification

Message to all parents, staff and community members
The SMMUSD Board of Education has taken the interest of the Malibu community to separate from our district into a Malibu Unified School District (MUSD) very seriously. During the past two years, the School Board has focused on the financial aspects of this request, seeking to determine whether there is an approach that would leave the remaining Santa Monica district financially whole while providing Malibu with the local control it seeks.
