Supporting Students with 21st-Century Schools

Although some SMMUSD schools and classrooms have been modernized, many others have not, and there is more to do to support 21st-century learning and improve safety in all our neighborhood schools. In order to address these needs and provide maximum local control to Malibu and Santa Monica in determining the use of each community's funds, the District is considering the creation of two School Facility Improvement Districts ("SFIDs") and potential separate bond measures for Santa Monica and Malibu. Christian FuhrerChristian Fuhrer Appointed Grant Elementary School Principal

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Christian Fuhrer as the new Grant Elementary School principal at its June 28, 2018, regular board meeting. Fuhrer joins SMMUSD from Beverly Hills Unified School District, where he has served as a technology and media arts teacher, assistant principal and principal. As principal for the past four years, he led a K-8 school with 760 students and 80 staff members. Read More >

SMMUSD Seeking Applicants for Two Committees: Financial Oversight Committee and Santa Monica Facility District Advisory Committee

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's Financial Oversight Committee (FOC) is seeking qualified candidates who will bring a depth of business and/or financial expertise to the committee. There is one (1) upcoming vacancy with a term beginning July 1, 2018. FOC application forms are available from the Superintendent's Office or online at http://www.smmusd.org/fiscal/financialDAC.html and can be mailed to the district office (1651 16th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90404) or scanned and emailed to foc@smmusd.org.

The SMMUSD Facility District Advisory Committee for Santa Monica (SM-FDAC) is seeking qualified candidates for two open seats. The committee meets quarterly and twice a year with the Malibu FDAC. The purpose of the FDAC is to provide the Board of Education and district staff with the community's perspective regarding the use of bond funds for school site construction in conformance with board-established and approved goals and priorities.

Application forms are available through the Superintendent's Office or online at http://fip.smmusd.org/pdf/FDAC.Application.pdf. The deadline for applications is July 13, 2018. Completed applications can be mailed to the District Office, (1651 16th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90404) or emailed to dacapps@smmusd.org.

SMMUSD Announces New Family Engagement Coordinator

Dr. Freda RossiThe Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Freda Rossi as the new family engagement coordinator at its June 14, 2018 regular board meeting. Her appointment is effective July 1, 2018. Dr. Rossi brings more than 20 years of experience in public education from K - 12 school districts and several universities where she has served as professor, instructional services director, English Learner and Bilingual program manager, elementary school principal, literacy coach and dual immersion teacher. Currently, Dr. Rossi is a HeartMath coach and educational leadership consultant. Read More >

SMMUSD School Board Approves Framework for Malibu Unification

Fifty-year revenue-sharing plan recommended
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved a framework for Malibu unification, with a 50-year revenue sharing plan, at a special board meeting held on March 20, 2018 in the district's boardroom in Santa Monica. After a three-hour presentation and discussion, the school board voted 6-1 to approve a unification plan that will be pursued provided that the City of Malibu withdraws or temporarily halts consideration of the petition by Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization while additional details of this concept are worked out.
